Snail’s Lament

You can’t tell I’m angry
You can’t tell I’m sad
Must I shout at you
To show you that I’m mad?

Can’t you read between the lines
Can’t you see that all isn’t fine
Behind this expressionless face
Waves of emotion crash the precipice

Is composure a trait of stability
Or will it be misconstrued as coldness
An iron man without a heart
Who knows not what is tenderness

But no!
A robot I am not
I not just think but feel and hurt
I live inside a shell
Because the real me is soft and weak

If you promise not to poke me with a stick
If you promise not to add salt to the wound
If you promise not to run away at what you see
I will give you access
I will become vulnerable
Then you will get to see
Who I really am.
